veryone is an innovator. A dreamer. A world of human potential.
But we don’t all begin from the same place.
Our starting points - and the paths ahead of us - are shaped by
circumstances as varied as our stories.
There is no single roadmap, no simple way to describe the distance each
of us must travel to realise what we are capable of becoming.
What I have learned, however, is that encouragement can change
everything. A word, a belief, a moment of support at the right time can
shape how far someone is willing to go - and whether they believe they
can go there at all.
My dad gave me that. He believed in me without hesitation, always
certain there was nothing I couldn’t do. That belief gave me the
confidence to follow a path that is often uncertain, even risky - and to
keep going. He passed away recently, but what he gave me continues.
This 10th Anniversary Edition is a moment to look back at what has shaped
the journey so far, and what continues to move it forward.
So wherever you are, whatever your starting point - be encouraging.
Be kind. You never know how far your words might carry someone.

Shaping climate coverage at
n the lead up to COP23 in
Bonn, the UN Climate Change
Secretariat announced its
“key partners” - institutions,
NGOs, businesses, and media
outlets supporting global efforts
to tackle climate change and
advance the Paris Agreement.
Innovators Magazine was
named among these partners,
providing media coverage of the
conference’s work.
COP23 marked an important stage
in turning the ambitions of the
2015 Paris Agreement into practical
action. Negotiators focused on
advancing the detailed ‘rulebook’
that would guide how countries
measure, report, and strengthen
their climate commitments in the
years ahead.
The conference also launched the
Talanoa Dialogue, a collaborative
process designed to encourage
countries, businesses, and civil
society to raise climate ambition
and accelerate global action
toward limiting temperature rise.
Around 25,000 participants
attended COP23, bringing together
representatives from government,
industry, civil society, and academia
to help move the Paris Agreement
from vision to implementation.
In 2017 Innovators Magazine is named official
media partner of the UN Climate Change
Conference (COP23) taking place in Bonn, after
signing an MoU with organisers, UNFCCC.

A CONVERSATION WITH A PIONEER:
BERTRAND PICCARD AT COP23
s part of the magazine’s
exclusive coverage from
Bonn, there was the
opportunity to sit down with
serial pioneer Bertrand Piccard,
a towering figure in global
innovation and sustainability.
Best known for his historic
circumnavigation of the globe
in a solar-powered aircraft,
Piccard was at COP23 to spotlight
his World Alliance platform
- an initiative dedicated to
promoting technologies that
are not only energy-efficient but
also profitable, environmentally
responsible, and capable of
driving sustainable growth.
Speaking with Innovators
Magazine, Piccard emphasised
that true success begins with
communication and a radical
shift in thinking. “We have to
learn to think differently,” he
explained. “As humans - or even
as companies - we are prisoners
of what we have learned,
prisoners of our habits, prisoners
of the paradigms we believe are
so strong and important.”
For Piccard, innovation is more
than generating new ideas -
it’s about breaking free from
limiting paradigms. “Innovation
doesn’t come from having a
new idea,” he said. “It happens
when you identify and remove
the barriers that prevent
progress. Only then can true
transformation occur.”
This insight, delivered by one
of the most visionary figures of
our time, underscores the spirit
of innovation that Innovators
Magazine has celebrated
throughout its 10-year journey
- a spirit that challenges
assumptions, redefines
possibilities, and inspires the
world to act sustainably.

“
We are delighted to welcome these
internationally recognized partners who are
backing our work at COP23 with diverse and
important support. We hope they, and many others,
will continue to support the Paris Agreement’s
ambitions and realize this year’s COP23 motto -
FURTHER, FASTER, TOGETHER.”

From FOUNDERS
to the FUTURE
t COP26 in Glasgow,
global leaders, scientists
and innovators gathered
to accelerate climate
action. For Innovators Magazine, the
summit also reflected something
more personal.
The publication was founded by
Susan and Iain Robertson, and
during COP26 their daughter Holly
joined them inside the conference -
bringing a younger perspective into
the media spaces where climate
solutions were being debated.
From the Fridays for Future march
through Glasgow to conversations
in the Action Hub and media zone
inside the 2021 COP, Holly spoke with
participants about the challenge
many were focused on: how the
world can win the race to net zero.
Her questions reflected a message
heard across the conference - that
the decisions shaping the climate
transition today will define the future
for the generations that follow.

Reasons to believe
ince serving as an official
media partner at COP23 in
Bonn, Innovators Magazine
has returned to the UN
climate summit each year as
accredited media, documenting
the ideas, partnerships and
innovations shaping the transition
to a more sustainable future.
At COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh and
COP28 in Dubai, the magazine
launched #ACOPHalfFull, a video
series exploring voices from the
global climate conversation that
offer genuine reasons for optimism.
Presented by Marc Buckley,
Innovators Magazine editor-
at-large, and podcast host,
the series invited leaders,
innovators, educators, Indigenous
representatives and young
changemakers to reflect on
what they were seeing at COP
- and beyond - that gave them
confidence about the future.
Across dozens of conversations,
a consistent message emerged:
while the challenges are
immense, the scale of innovation,
collaboration and commitment
now underway offers powerful
reasons to believe that the future
can still inspire.
Johan Rockström, Director, Potsdam Institute for
Climate Impact Research
“If we succeed in this transition, the result is a
healthier, safer, more resilient future.”
Carlos Ruiz Garvia, UNFCCC Global Innovation Hub
“We need this optimism. We have the tools - now
everyone must play their part.”
Gunhild A. Stordalen, Founder, EAT Forum
“If we keep believing - yes, we can - and push
together, governments will follow.”
Bernhard Kowatsch, Head, WFP Innovation Accelerator
“Our WFP Innovation portfolio has already impacted
nine million lives - now we must scale faster.”

from climate and energy to health,
equality and beyond. The focus
was simple: not just what you do,
but the difference it makes.
From the outset, it was more
than an awards programme. It
was designed as a catalyst -
raising awareness of the Global
Goals while connecting those
actively working to deliver them.
A space to inspire, collaborate
and accelerate progress. And the
momentum was immediate.
In its second year, entries surged -
up 100% on 2017 - with applications
arriving from over a dozen
countries within just six weeks of
launch. The scale, diversity and
quality of submissions made one
thing clear: A global movement
was already underway.
Global Game Changers captured
that moment - spotlighting
pioneers who were not
waiting for change but
building it. Organisations
large and small,
individuals at every stage
of their journey, all united
by a shared ambition
to push boundaries and
rethink what innovation
can achieve.

A new chapter:
Europe Next
In 2015, the same year the UN Sustainable Development Goals were launched, Innovators
Magazine was founded with a clear purpose: to inspire action for the Global Goals by putting
the people and organisations solving the world’s toughest challenges front and centre.
From day one, we took a solutions journalism approach - celebrating creativity, frontier
technologies, and social innovation not as abstract ideas, but as real-world transformations
reshaping communities, industries, and planetary outcomes. Over the decade, our
contributors have spanned fields from food systems and biotechnology to design,
justice, and climate solutions, while our partnerships have taken us into European
institutions and era-defining global forums and events.
But as these stories accumulated, a deeper insight emerged.
16 | INNOVATORS MAGAZINE | 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY EDITION
THE FUTURE IS LOSING ITS
POWER TO INSPIRE
Today, many people across Europe see ‘the
future’ not as something to believe in, but as
something to fear or endure. The dominant
narrative has shifted toward loss - of security,
opportunity, and confidence - despite record
levels of investment in climate, health, digital
leadership, and societal transition.
This reveals a paradox. Europe is rich in
solutions and innovation, yet most people
experience change as something done to
them rather than something they recognise
or can shape. The stories that once inspired
action have not been enough to restore belief
in the future itself.
After a decade of reporting from the frontlines
of innovation, one thing is clear: stories
alone — no matter how compelling - cannot
rebuild belief unless they are rooted in shared
experience, community engagement, and
visible impact.
A TOMORROW THAT
FEELS POSSIBLE AGAIN
This is why Innovators Magazine is becoming
a founding partner in Europe Next - a mission-
driven public infrastructure for connecting
impact, community, and narrative in ways that
make the future feel possible again.
Europe Next doesn’t abandon the mission to
make meaning from innovation; it expands
it - from a magazine that tells stories to a
platform that cultivates shared belief.
Where Innovators Magazine already
operates within the field of innovation and its
networks, Europe Next represents a natural
progression—expanding reach, relevance,
and impact by bringing innovation into the
spaces where people live and work, making
its impact visible in ways that connect
with real experience, and creating formats
such as public events and an embedded
journalism network that strengthen trust and
participation.
BUILDING MOMENTUM
ALONG THE WAY
Europe Next begins with a simple shift: people
don’t believe in the future because they’re
told to - they believe when they can see and
participate in it. By amplifying innovation that
matters and connecting it with communities
across Europe, we can turn the
narrative of fear toward credible
optimism - belief grounded in
real impact, not spin. This isn’t
about blind positivity. It’s about
confidence built through
evidence, continuity, and shared
agency.
A PLATFORM FOR
THE NEXT DECADE
Europe Next will operate
through three
interconnected
pillars. It will deliver
embedded impact
journalism that
captures the lived
experiences of innovation
across sectors and
places. It will build a
European community
of practice where local
voices co-own and co-
shape the narrative. And
it will develop flagship
public formats - from TV
events and dialogues
to films - all designed
to make innovation
recognisable, tangible, and felt.
Together, these elements create a new kind
of continuity - one that Europe’s innovation
landscape has long lacked, and one that
the world urgently needs.
WHY IT MATTERS NOW
Europe stands at a crossroads. Climate
urgency, digital transformation, and
democratic resilience all demand more than
policies or technologies. They demand public
belief that the future is worth shaping — and
that people are part of that shaping.
Innovators Magazine showed that
solutions exist. Europe Next will ensure they
matter - together.
And so, as we celebrate ten years
of stories that have connected,
inspired, and challenged, we invite
you to join us in the next chapter:
building a future Europe can
believe in, because it’s being
made real by the people
living it.
